Anthropology is the exact science that studies human and animal behavior, modern society, ancient civilizations, and various human cultures. The Bachelor of Science with an Anthropology degree has requirements to take a core group of classes that outlines techniques of ethnography and survey, history of the field, and specific emphasis on the following fields:
Sociocultural Emphasis
This area of study is characterized by a sociology and history focus. The students need to isolate at least one geographic region for study.
Linguistic Emphasis
The student is required to study one or more foreign languages including sociology, linguistics, and communication studies.
Biological Emphasis
Various courses in ecology, evolutionary biology, human genetics, behavioral ecology, and human biology are part of this specialty. In addition, it’s also a requirement to have an observation of primate behavior.
Archaelogical Emphasis
This area of study includes museum techniques, digging, and also lab and field work as part of the hands-on training.
Focus on the Specific Field
Investigate all schools deeply to find out the departmental focus. Some of them have their own specialization and only a few will offer all programs altogether. Each college or university is different and there are certain things for students to expect. Basic core courses in physical anthropology, cultural anthropology, and archaeology are given. In addition, the students will probably be required to take several classes outside of the field of Anthropology such biology, sociology, and even statistics. The exact requirements will really depend on the program and the Anthropology professors teaching in the university.
Majority of Anthropology programs have requirement of limited classes so that students may focus on other non-anthropology sub-discipline if they will desire to do so. Most universities would have a 30-40 hours lecture total for an Anthropology degree and the advisors of the students will recommend the other things to do in the extra hours. For example, if the focus is archaeology, pursuing an earth science minor or geology minor could be beneficial. On the other hand, cultural anthropologists may take additional courses in psychology or sociology. Physical anthropology students may also take biology courses. And finally, the students focusing on linguistics should study languages in the school’s foreign languages department.
